ED questions Congress MP Karti in Chinese visa case - IndiaTimes

NEW DELHI: Calling it the "most bogus" case against him, Congress MP from Sivaganga appeared before ED on Saturday for questioning in a money laundering case linked to issuance of visa to some Chinese nationals in 2011, allegedly in exchange of a bribe of Rs 50 lakh. The entry permits were issued in 2011 in violation of rules when his father P Chidambaram was the Union home minister.
Karti, who first told reporters outside ED office that he had come to offer Christmas greetings, said the case was "dead, dormant and closed".He said it was for the 20th time that he had appeared before the agency and called the case "most bogus". He also emphasised that his lawyers have filed a 100-page response to the summons regarding information sought by the agency.

This was the third summons issued to Karti, who had earlier refused to attend ED summons at its office when summoned on December 12 and later again on December 16, citing his busy schedule during the just-concluded Parliament's winter session.

ED's money laundering investigation is based on a CBI FIR. Karti's close associate S Bhaskaraman was co-accused by CBI for allegedly receiving kickbacks from Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd, a Vedanta Group company, setting up a power plant in Punjab with Chinese assistance.
